How do campaigns receive funds?

Contributions are credited to the organizer's wallet when they're paid, and a campaign's share of a sale once the delivery is confirmed. The organizer withdraws from the wallet to PayPal.

Money for a campaign is credited to its organizer's OpenGiving wallet, and the organizer withdraws it to PayPal.

Whether someone contributes directly or a marketplace sale splits to your campaign, you don't need to chase payments or process transfers.

Direct Contributions

When someone contributes directly to your campaign:

  1. Payment processes through our payment provider
  2. The contribution is credited to your wallet as soon as the payment goes through
  3. Transaction is recorded on the contributor's GivingProfile
  4. Campaign progress updates automatically

Marketplace Sales

When someone sells an item supporting your campaign:

  1. Buyer completes checkout
  2. We hold the payment until the delivery is confirmed
  3. When the payment is released, the campaign's share is credited to your wallet and the seller's share to theirs
  4. Both transactions appear on GivingProfiles

The seller can release the payment once the delivery is confirmed. If they don't, it's released automatically 7 days later.

Withdrawals

When you want to move your balance, request a withdrawal from your wallet:

  • Minimum — $10.00
  • Enter your PayPal email — that's where we send the money
  • Timing — Withdrawals up to $250.00 go out through PayPal automatically, usually within a few minutes. A larger one waits until someone on our team sends it.
  • Transaction records — full history available

Timing

  • Direct contributions: in your wallet as soon as they're paid
  • Marketplace sales: in your wallet once the delivery is confirmed and the payment is released
  • Withdrawals: as above

Fees

A direct contribution pays no OpenGiving fee. The contributor pays the payment processing fee on top, so the campaign receives the whole contribution.

On a marketplace sale, OpenGiving's 9% comes out of the price of a physical item or a service before the campaign and the seller split it. A digital item pays none: the buyer pays a flat digital service fee instead, and part of it goes to the campaign.

Your campaign dashboard shows what the campaign received.
